GAME RULES

1. Equipment - all equipment will be supplied at the tournament.

2. Game Time/Default:

i. Round Robin matches are approximately 20 minutes in length.

ii. Teams are comprised of 6 players with a minimum of 2 women and 2 men on the court at the beginning of each match. A default will occur if any team cannot field at least 4 players (two of each gender) within 5 minutes of the official match start time.

iii. The 6 players that start each point are the ONLY players that can play during that particular point.  Substitute players must wait until the next point before playing. Teams can alter their roster for each point, as long as the gender requirements are met. Exception: Injured players can be substituted midway during a point if necessary (male for male, female for female only)

3. Starting the Game and General Rules:

i. 4 dodgeballs will be used for each match.

ii. To start each point, each team stands at their respective back line with two dodgeballs each. The referee will start the match by shouting, "Ready, Set, Dodgeball".

iii. Once play has started, players must remain on their own side of half.

iv. Players can lean over the half line to retrieve a ball, but the players cannot touch any part of their opponents half of the court with any part of their own body. If any part of a player touches their opponents' side of half, that person is out.

v. A ball is considered "dead" as soon as it hits the sand, walls, ceiling, mesh or any other obstacles around the court. A player is not eliminated after being hit by a dead ball (i.e. if the ball hits the wall, then hits the player, the player is not eliminated).  All other balls are considered "live".

vi. Eliminated players should sit on the opposite side/corner of their team bench in order of being eliminated (in an effort to clarify who is participating in that particular point and which order team members are to return back to the court).

vii. Live players may NOT leave the court at anytime to retrieve a ball.  A player must have at least one part of their body within the playing area at all times.  A player can reach over the sidelines or endlines in order to retrieve a ball, but must always be in contact with the playing area. The boundary lines are considered in.

viii. Balls that are thrown out of reach of the playing area will be retrieved by Sport & Social staff.  Before retrieving these balls, the Sport & Social staff may throw another ball back into play to replace the one that left the playing area. Balls can only be re-entered into play by Sport & Social staff.

ix. Teams will switch sides of the court every three points.  i.e. at the end of point 3, point 6, point 9, etc..

4. Throwing the Balls and Eliminating Players

i. Players can only be in possession of ONE ball at any given time.  Therefore, if a player holding a ball catches another ball (therefore, holding both balls in their hands) neither the thrower nor the catcher is eliminated; play should just continue.  Players can, however, place the ball they are holding down on the ground to catch an incoming ball.

ii. Players can throw a ball in any manner (with the exception of squeezing the air out of the ball) from anywhere on their own side of the court.  A player/team cannot hold a ball in their hands in an effort to "stockpile" the balls on their own side of court, therefore balls should be released within 10 seconds.

iii. To eliminate an opposing player, a "live" ball must hit the player from the NECK downwards.  If a “live” ball hits multiple players before becoming “dead”, then all players hit with the live ball are considered out.

iv. If a 'head shot' occurs, neither the thrower nor the person hit in the head is eliminated, and play continues.  NOTE:  the ball's first point of contact is what matters (i.e. if a ball first hits the player in the leg or off a ball being used to block, and then bounces up and hits their head, the player is OUT).

v.   If a player catches a "live" ball that is thrown at him/her, the thrower is OUT.  IN ADDITION, the team that caught the ball can return a previously eliminated player to the court. The player that returns to the game MUST be the first player who was ruled "out" during that particular point (and the order of returning players should be maintained. i.e. the third player to be eliminated will be the third player to return to the court). Reminders: substitute players must wait until the next point and a player that is already holding a ball cannot "catch" a second ball (as per Rule 4i)

vi. A player that is holding a ball can use it to deflect/block another ball that is thrown at them by an opponent. However, if the ball being held is dropped due to the contact of ball thrown at them, the person who dropped the ball is OUT.  A deflected ball is still considered "live" until it hits the ground/wall/obstacle. (i.e. if it hits another player or the player using the ball to block, before hitting the ground or wall, the hit player is out).

vii.  A live ball that rebounds off of a player (from an unsuccessful catch, a deflection off their body, a redirection by another ball, etc) may be caught by any other in-bounds player prior to the ball becoming dead (hitting sand, wall or obstacle).  As usual, the thrower is OUT, and the catching team can return a player.

viii.  Referees have the final say as to whether a player has been hit or not.  However, it is the responsibility of all players to be fair and honest for all calls.  The referee is in place to end disputes, not to make every obvious call.

ix.  When only 2 players remain on the court (1 from each team), the referee should announce that the two players have "one-minute" to eliminate each other. After the one minute has expired, if the point has not yet ended, each team will return one player to the court. (again, each team must abide by their order of returning players - Rule 4v).

5. Scoring/Winning

i. Matches will consist of as many points that can be played in the given time period.

ii. If a game is still being played when time expires, the team with the most live players on the court at the time will win the game. If teams have the same number of players on the court when time expires, both teams receive a point for that game.

iii. Ties are allowed during round robin play.  If a match is tied at the end of a playoff match, the tie will be broken by continuing the current game until one team has won the deciding point. (up to a maximum of 3 extra minutes).

6. Tournament Seeding/Ranking

i. During the preliminary round, teams will receive 2 points for a win, 1 point for a tie and 0 points for a loss.

ii. After the preliminary round, teams in each pool will be ranked based on game points (i.e. wins, losses and ties).  The top two teams in each pool will receive a bye through the first round of the playoffs. There will also be one wildcard team that receives a bye through the first round of playoffs for a total of 15 teams.

iii.  All other teams in the tournament will be ranked amongst each other based on game points.

iii. To break a tie amongst teams with the same number of game points, the following criteria will be used: (a) points +/-, (b) points against, (c) points for, (d) coin toss.  Head to head matches will not be considered.  NOTE: All teams will make the playoffs.
